Building Others Makes Your Heart Sing.

Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu.

I am very fond of this insightful South African expression. It means ‘we are who/where we are because of others’. I have come to realise that no-one can do anything alone. It is impossible. We need to lift each other up. I am reminded here that together in unity we are an unbreakable force. I say it again, we can do ABSOLUTELY nothing without the help of others. Nothing.

Some things can be done alone, surely…

You are probably thinking, “oh, but surely I can do some things alone”. Assuming that you are thinking, “But I can stay at home…read my book, cook my food and sit in front of a TV set without needing any help from anyone”. I still stand by my words that you can do none of those things without the involvement of others.

You know this…

The home you live in, someone built it. The book you read, someone wrote it. Another person published it. Trees had to be brought down to make up the pages. I wont bore you with the details of everything else from who made your cookware to your couch and your TV set — and the people that appear in it. This article is not really about that.

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” – Charles Dickens

This article is really about ubuntu. It is about consciously helping another without any agenda. It is about being selfless and giving without expecting anything back. It is about reminding others of how precious they are, even when they do not see it. It is about lighting the way for others to see where they are going. It is about sharing what you know with those who look to you for knowledge and answers. This is what this article is about. And this is why we are here.

This brings no contentment…

We are not here to hoard stuff. Not to withhold significant and life-changing information from others. Not to accumulate useless matter that bears no substance for our ultimate contentment. Not to trample on others on our away to what we perceive as “success with a few casualties”. Not to feel superior to others, as such a concept is redundant, it is just the ego playing mind-tricks. And we are most definitely not here to judge anyone or anything.

“You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” – John Bunyan

As you know,  this path – service to self – will never bring you contentment. However, I assure you that lifting others will make your heart sing. I am not suggesting that you spend your life as mother Theresa –  an inspiration to many. Rather, I am encouraging you to take the opportunity to show kindness when you are faced with it. From time to time we are presented with an opportunity to be selfless. May you see it and may you take it.

Some perspective…

Imagine if everyone’s mission was to be of service to others, in a million different ways of course, how would that be? My imagination is running wild. Wow. Unimaginable. Once again, I encourage you to take the opportunity to help another when the occasion presents itself.

In conclusion

It is quite evident that we can do nothing without each other. Together, we are a great force of inconceivable strength. Divided, we are just a water-bucket compromised by unforgiving holes. When you are presented with the opportunity, lift yourself up by helping another. Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu.

I see you.
